Dr Manmohan Singh Scholarship:

The Dr. Manmohan Singh Scholarship is awarded for doctoral studies at St. John's College, University of Cambridge. It is an international award, administered by the St. John’s College, to Honour Dr. Manmohan Singh, the Prime Minister of India. This Scholarship is offered to those students who wish to pursue a doctorate degree from the St John’s College, University of Cambridge. This scholarship was started in 2007 to enable academically outstanding Indian students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds to come and study at St. John’s College, University of Cambridge.

This Scholarship is particularly offered to those students who wish to pursue a doctorate degree (PhD) from St John’s College, University of Cambridge. 

Eligibility:

The applicant for Dr Manmohan Singh Scholarships must hold a Master’s (postgraduate) degree from a reputed/recognized India university/institution with a First Class award (UG and PG) in the relevant subject/field and must be applying for a PhD degree from St John’s college is any of the following subjects –

  • Science and Technology
  • Economics
  • Social Sciences
  • Aerospace Engineering
  • Marine Engineering
  • Energy Studies

Besides they should:

  • An Indian national with a valid Indian passport and currently based in India.
  • Below 35 years of age before 31 January in year of application.
  • Not already had significant exposure to UK education or received UK government funding.
  • Show evidence of leadership qualities (to be assessed from personal statements e.g. extracurricular activities and/ or evidence of having made a difference to the country/ society/ participation in symposia in the relevant subject, or peer reviewed publication in the area.)
  • Keen to pursue a full time Doctoral Research degree from St. John's College, University of Cambridge commencing by September/ October.
  • Fluent in spoken and written English.
  • Able to full fill any other admission criteria laid down by the university.

Scholarship Amount: 

There is no specific amount which will be offered to the candidates who will qualify for Dr Manmohan Singh Scholarships for Doctoral Studies but the amount would be enough to cover the following costs. 

  • Academic fees
  • Monthly stipend to cover the living expenses
  • International Airfare
  • UK visa charges

How to apply:

  • The applicants have to visit the University of Cambridge Graduate Admissions Office web site: www.graduate.study.cam.ac.uk and make formal application to the University. at the same time as to the Dr Man Mohan Singh Scholarships. 
  • The applicants have to select St John’s College as their first choice College on their application form.
  • They have to indicate that they are applying for the Dr Manmohan Singh Scholarships, but also to complete the section applying for funding from the University.
  • Applicants to complete the College Application form attached to notify St John’s that they have applied to the University and wish to be considered for the Scholarship.

Selection: 

Only those applicants who get an offer of admission at St John’s College will be eligible for the award of the Scholarship. The candidates should not approach St. John's College directly at this stage. 

Selection is based on short listing and personal interviews. British Council will short list the candidates from the applications received and they are called for personal interview, which will be held in New Delhi. Applicants are requested not to contact the British Council office directly.

Subsequent to the interviews, the selection committee will identify the required number of candidates for the awards. Candidates will be expected to make their own travel and accommodation arrangements for attending the interview. The decision of the selection committee will be final and the results will be communicated within a month following the interview.

Pre-departure briefings, UK Visa and travel arrangements for the selected candidates will be co-ordinated by the St. John's College.
